An exciting tour for repeat guests, tailored by Rockjumper Birding Tours, taking in diverse and breathtaking scenery of South Africa’s eastern reaches, with our primary focus being KwaZuluNatal. We began in the mist-belt forests and grasslands of the midlands where we explored Karkloof, Marutswa Forest and Richmond for their respective specials before we ventured up the rugged Sani Pass into Lesotho. Here we searched for altitudinal specials and a few Karoo species found at the eastern edge of their range. Following a very successful day we then dropped from the escarpment and headed towards the coast, immersing ourselves in what is arguably South Africa’s richest and most diverse region of habitats. From coastal plains to sand forests, estuaries to acacia woodland, scarp forests and wetlands – we explored it all – with great reward! We then climbed back up to the escarpment and the highveld grasslands surrounding the quaint little town of Wakkerstroom, where unseasonal snow did little to hold back the drive to tick off some of the regions valued endemics. With the hard work done we wrapped up with two nights at Nambiti Plains Lodge, where the welcome luxury put the finishing touches to a very successful tour. 12 nights / 370 species in total.
